Moxibustion is a traditional healing method that uses the warmth and energy of burning mugwort (Artemisia argyi) to stimulate circulation, nourish the body, and dispel cold. At Retreat Acupuncture, we use moxibustion on its own or in combination with acupuncture to help you heal more deeply and comfortably.
What Does Moxibustion Do?
- Warms meridians and promotes Qi and blood circulation
- Disperses cold and dampness from the bodyStrengthens digestion and Spleen-Yang function
- Supports fertility and menstrual regularity
- Relieves pain, especially when related to cold or stagnation
“Moxa is the fire of life—it returns Yang when it collapses, and restores warmth to where there is cold.”
— Zhen Jiu Da Cheng (Great Compendium of Acupuncture and Moxibustion, 1601)
Types of Moxibustion We Use:
- Direct Moxa – A rice grain-sized cone placed on the skin and lit for therapeutic heat
- Indirect Moxa – A moxa stick is held near acupuncture points to gently warm the area
- Needle-top Moxa – Moxa is placed on the handle of an acupuncture needle to deliver warmth into deeper layers
- Moxa boxes or warmers – Used for larger areas such as the low back or abdomen
Conditions Commonly Treated:
- Menstrual cramps, infertility, and cold uterus
- Chronic pain, arthritis, and cold-type joint disorders
- Fatigue, weakness, or poor circulation
- Digestive issues and loose stools
- Immune deficiency and frequent colds
Research Highlights:
- A 2018 meta-analysis supports the efficacy of moxibustion in reducing menstrual pain (dysmenorrhea) and regulating cycles.
Zhu et al., BMC Complement Altern Med, 2018 - Clinical trials have also shown moxa can boost immunity and improve digestive health by modulating inflammatory responses.
“When Yang is weak and cannot move the Yin, the use of moxa will restore harmony.”
— Huangdi Neijing
We offer both direct and indirect moxibustion as well as smokeless options for those sensitive to aromas. Moxa is especially helpful for digestive issues, menstrual pain, fatigue, and certain musculoskeletal conditions. It’s often used alongside acupuncture to deepen the therapeutic effects.
